2,500 IQ Go Customers Later — Here's What We've Learned

The product that changed everything

When we first launched IQ Go, we honestly were not sure how it would land. A flat-rate annual SIM for European travel, compatible with smartphones and routers alike — it felt like a simple idea, but simple ideas are often harder to execute than they sound.

A few years on, IQ Go has become the product IQ Mobile is most known for. We have over 2,500 active customers, and the growth has not come from advertising or clever funnels. It has come from word of mouth — from customers telling friends, family, and colleagues that they found a travel SIM that actually works.

Here is the honest story of what we learned along the way.

Why people buy IQ Go

Ask our customers why they chose IQ Go and the answers cluster around a handful of themes.

Routers. A surprising number of our customers are not buying IQ Go for a smartphone. They are buying it for a portable router or MiFi device. Families who holiday in Europe want to share a single data connection across multiple phones, tablets, and laptops without everyone fighting over a hotspot. IQ Go is one of the very few travel SIMs that works reliably in SIM-capable routers, and that fact alone has driven a huge amount of our growth.

Simplicity. Our customers are not early adopters hunting for the best deal on a tech forum. They are people who want to go to France or Spain and not think about their phone bill. IQ Go costs £20 upfront and £20 per year. That is it. No monthly contracts, no data bundles to juggle, no roaming charges to dread on the way home.

Trust. We are a small business in Bath, not a faceless telecom giant. When something goes wrong — and occasionally things do — customers can pick up the phone and speak to a real person. That matters more than most businesses admit.

The network. IQ Go runs on EE — the UK's best 5G network. Whether our customers are in Paris, Barcelona, or the Dolomites, they get a strong, reliable signal.

The EU fair use policy — and what happened next

We will be honest about this because we think honesty is important.

When the EU introduced its 25% fair use data roaming policy, it created a problem for us. Customers who had come to rely on using IQ Go as their primary connection while travelling hit data limits they had not anticipated. Some left. We cannot blame them — they had bought a product with a specific promise, and the rules changed around us.

It was a difficult period. We had to communicate a policy change that was not our choice, to customers who were understandably frustrated, and we had to do it clearly and quickly.

What happened next, though, is what we are most proud of. The customers who stayed with us through that period became our most loyal advocates. They understood that we were subject to the same regulations as every other network, and they appreciated that we were straight with them about it.

Since then, IQ Go has grown steadily. The customers we have now are well-informed, realistic about what the product is, and consistently delighted by it.

The data checker — a long time coming

One of the most common questions we heard from IQ Go customers was simple: how do I know how much data I have left?

It sounds like a basic thing. But managing data on a travel SIM that works across multiple devices, with bundles that renew at different points, is genuinely complicated to surface in a clear way.

Earlier this year we launched the data checker inside the IQ Mobile customer portal at my.helloiq.uk. Log in, and you can see your remaining data balance in plain English. No diving into settings menus, no calling us to ask.

The reaction from customers has been overwhelmingly positive. It is one of those features that, once people have it, they cannot imagine going without.

Auto top-up — never running out mid-trip

The data checker led naturally to the next request: can it just top up automatically?

Auto top-up is now live for IQ Go customers. Set a threshold — say, when you drop below 1GB — and the system will automatically add more data to your SIM without you having to do anything. You can set spending limits so there are no surprises, and you can turn it off any time.

For customers who use IQ Go in a router, this has been transformative. You are sharing a connection with four family members in a villa in Tuscany. The last thing you want is for the internet to go down because someone was streaming Netflix. Auto top-up means it does not.

What is coming next — the mobile app

We are putting the finishing touches on the IQ Mobile mobile app.

The app will bring together everything IQ Go customers currently manage through the web portal — data checking, top-ups, account management, renewal reminders — into a clean, simple mobile experience. Given that our customers are, by definition, using their phones when they need this most, it feels overdue.

We will share more details when we are closer to launch. If you want to be among the first to know, subscribe to our newsletter and we will let you know when it is ready.

There has never been a better time to be an IQ Go customer

When we launched IQ Go, we sold you a physical SIM and an annual renewal. That was the whole product.

Today, IQ Go customers get a physical SIM, an annual renewal, a real-time data checker, auto top-up, UK-based customer support, and a mobile app on the way. The price has not changed.

We are proud of that. And we are grateful to the 2,500 customers who have trusted us with their connectivity.

If you are not yet an IQ Go customer and you travel to Europe — or if you use a router or MiFi device — take a look at what IQ Go offers. We think you will like what you see.
