Basic button phone or simple smartphone?
Both are designed for older users — the right choice depends on what the phone is for. Here is how they compare on the things that matter.
| Basic button phone | Simple smartphone | |
|---|---|---|
| Ease of use | Easiest — physical keypad, no touchscreen to learn | Easy — large icons and simplified menus, but touchscreen-based |
| WhatsApp & video calls | Not supported | Yes — designed for WhatsApp, video calls and photo sharing |
| Camera | Basic or none | Proper camera for family photos |
| Emergency SOS | Yes — dedicated emergency call button | Yes — emergency function built in |
| Battery life | Days between charges | Charge every day or two, like any smartphone |

Why choose a specialist senior phone?
Standard smartphones have become increasingly complex, with tiny text, gesture-based navigation, and constant software updates. For older users or those less familiar with technology, this can make mobile a frustrating experience rather than a helpful one.
Senior-friendly phones solve this by putting simplicity first. Larger text, higher contrast, fewer features, and clearer menus mean older users can make calls, send texts, and stay in touch with family without needing technical help every time something changes.
At IQ Mobile, we go one step further — every phone we sell is pre-configured by our team before dispatch. We activate the SIM, increase the display size, and check everything works. If you want contacts pre-loaded or the phone set up in a particular way, just let us know and we'll sort it.
All our handsets run on the best UK 5G network with 99% population coverage. Whether your loved one lives in a city or a rural area, they'll have reliable signal.
Are these smartphones or basic phones?▾
We offer both touchscreen smartphones with simplified interfaces and traditional keypad handsets. Our smartphones for seniors use large icons, high-contrast displays, and simplified menus — no technical knowledge needed. We also stock big-button handsets for those who prefer a classic phone layout.
Do you have phones for someone who is hard of hearing?▾
Yes. The Emporia V50 Euphoria is hearing aid compatible and pairs a large tactile keypad with a high-contrast colour display. If you are not sure which handset suits best, our UK support team can talk it through with you before you order.
What does "pre-configured" mean?▾
Before your phone leaves our warehouse, we activate the SIM, increase the font and icon sizes, and check everything is working. If you'd like us to pre-load contacts, just let us know at checkout.
Can I keep my existing phone number?▾
Yes. Text "PAC" to 65075 from your current SIM to get a porting code. Share it with us and we'll transfer your number, usually within one working day.
What network do the phones use?▾
All IQ Mobile plans use the best UK 5G network with 99% population coverage. This means strong signal in rural as well as urban areas.
What happens after the first free month?▾
After your included first month, your plan continues on our standard monthly SIM Only rates, starting from £7/month. You can cancel or change plan at any time.
Is this suitable for someone with dementia or low vision?▾
Yes. All our handsets use high-contrast displays and large text. The Emporia Smart 6 Lite is particularly well suited to users with low vision. For users with more complex needs, our team can advise on the best option — just give us a call.
What is the simplest smartphone for an elderly person?▾
The emporiaSMART.5 Mini is the simplest smartphone we sell — a compact touchscreen designed for WhatsApp, maps and parking apps, with large icons and no confusing extras. The Emporia Smart 6 Lite is the step up: a bigger 6.58-inch screen, a better camera and a four-button smart cover, and it suits users with low vision. Both arrive pre-configured, so there is nothing to set up.
What is the difference between a basic phone and a simple smartphone?▾
A basic (button) phone has a physical keypad and is built for calls and texts — large tactile keys, an emergency call button, and a battery that lasts days between charges. A simple smartphone has a touchscreen with large icons and simplified menus, and adds WhatsApp, video calling and a camera. If staying in touch with family photos and video calls matters, choose a simple smartphone; if reliable calls and texts are the whole job, a button phone is easier still.
